A note before you begin

The end of a year asks you to look forward. Start by looking back.

When you move straight into new plans without understanding the year you have just lived, it is easy to carry old assumptions into a new season.

Reflection gives experience a chance to become understanding. You begin to notice the choices you made, the conditions you faced, the people who influenced you, what gave you energy and what asked more of you than you expected.

Give the past its proper place: not something to deny, not something to live inside forever, but something you can learn from as you move forward.

This is not an exercise in finding fault or forcing every disappointment into a positive lesson. Some experiences are painful. Some questions have no neat answers. You can acknowledge that honestly.

A closer look inside

A little space to remember what the year held.

Thoughtful prompts, room to write, and a simple structure for making sense of the moments that shaped your 2026.

Inside The Year Behind You

Not just what happened.
What it meant.

A guided process that moves from remembering the year to understanding it, then deciding what to do with what you have learned.

01

Reconstruct your year

Revisit the months, rebuild a useful timeline and recover the details that memory may have blurred. Make room for ordinary life as well as major milestones.

REMEMBER
02

Meaningful moments and experiences

Choose up to three moments and look beneath the event: what happened, why it stayed with you, what you felt then and what you understand now.

UNDERSTAND
03

Recognise your wins

Give progress a fair place. Notice what you completed, improved, repaired, learned or navigated, including the quiet wins nobody else saw.

RECOGNISE
04

Disappointments and unfinished business

Examine what did not go as planned without turning an outcome into a judgment about your worth. Separate what was within your influence from what was not.

BE HONEST
05

Notice recurring patterns

Look for what repeated across your energy, relationships, work, decisions and environment. Treat patterns as clues to investigate, not labels to put on yourself.

DISCOVER
06

Lessons and discoveries

Turn experience into specific understanding. Choose the lessons that matter and consider what you might do differently because of them.

LEARN
07

Continue, change, release, resolve and explore

Sort what you have learned into five useful directions. Decide what is worth keeping, what needs a new approach, what to stop carrying, what needs attention and what deserves curiosity.

My Year in Review

Bring the year together in your own words. Capture the moments, progress, challenges, patterns and discoveries you want your future self to remember.

MAKE MEANING

A useful distinction

Clarity about the past is not yet a design for the future.

The Year Behind You helps you answer one important question: Where have I been? It gives you a considered account of the year you lived, not a rushed list of resolutions.

But understanding the past does not automatically tell you what to prioritise next. You may know what needs more attention and still need to decide what is realistic, what deserves your time and what trade-offs you are prepared to make.

That is why this reflection is the first stage of a wider process.

The Design Your Year method

Reflection is the beginning.
Not the whole journey.

The Year Behind You focuses on the first stage. The complete Design Your Year process continues through five more stages, each answering a different question.

Make room to think. Write what is true.

Make time for the things that mattered

Your year deserves more than a quick glance.

Set aside a little time, find a quiet place, and let the questions guide you. You do not have to complete everything in one sitting. A meaningful review is allowed to take the time it takes.

A thoughtful review

You do not need to have had a perfect year to reflect well.

You do not need a success story. A fair review makes room for progress and disappointment, clarity and uncertainty.

You do not need to force a lesson from everything. Some experiences simply deserve to be acknowledged. Some may need more time.

You do not need to control everything. Your choices matter, but so do circumstances, responsibilities, other people and chance.

You do need a little honesty. The aim is not an impressive account of your year. It is an honest one.

When you're ready for what's next

Don't just enter a new year.
Design it.

Take what the past has taught you and use it to make more deliberate choices about the year ahead.
