The story
When Neris Vale returns to the coastal town of Brackenreach, it is only supposed to be temporary. She has been hired to help catalogue the recordings of Lowwater Radio, a community station preparing to close its doors for good.
Among the thousands of ordinary broadcasts, Neris discovers a hidden collection from a project called The Future We Imagined. Ten years earlier, residents had recorded what they hoped Brackenreach would become, while the town debated an ambitious harbour redevelopment. The recordings were supposed to return to the air a decade later. They never did.
The redevelopment collapsed amid disagreement and public controversy. Over time, the town settled on a familiar explanation: resistance had stopped Brackenreach from moving forward. But the recordings tell a more complicated story. People had different reasons for supporting or opposing the plan. Some changed their minds. Some made promises they could not keep. And some were blamed for decisions they did not make alone.
The former station presenter, Ivo, knows more than he first admits. Neris must decide what preserving the archive really means: making every voice public, or respecting the people whose private words were never meant to be broadcast. The deeper she gets into the town's contested memory, the more she questions the story she has told herself about her own life.
Because preserving the past is not the same as being ruled by it. And telling the truth is not always as simple as making every secret public.
Beneath the mystery
At its heart, After What Was explores questions most of us encounter in one way or another.
How does a community come to accept one version of its history, and what happens when the evidence complicates it?
What do we owe the person we once believed we would become?
Does preserving the truth give us the right to expose every private thing?
Can we acknowledge what happened without allowing it to decide everything that comes next?
A note about the reading experience
After What Was is a work of literary and contemporary philosophical fiction. It is built around characters, a mystery, and the ordinary details of a town facing change.
It is meant to be read as a story first. You do not need to know anything about Design Your Year to enjoy it, and it does not ask you to follow a framework or complete an exercise.
But if a question or two follows you after the final page, that is part of the point.
